TRL: Somalia, not all about bad news

The on-going hunger catastrophe in Somalia and around the East African region is serious and sad, and the problems of delivering Western food aid is only one of the many troubled news we hear from there. In fact, anything written about Somalia these days seem to have a negative tone. Here are a few news stories providing a break from the norm and a little glimmer of hope.

1. Forget war and hunger: A few things you didn’t know about Somalia – AlertNet

“Insurgency, anarchy, drought, pirates, hunger… Such woes are the mainstays of most reports about Somalia. But here are some things you might not know about the East African country.”

2. Gaza launches relief campaign to support the Somali people – Maan News Agency

“The campaign is called “From Gaza hand in hand to save the children of Somalia” and will last throughout the holy month of Ramadan.”

3. Telecom Firms Thrive in Somalia Despite War, Shattered Economy – The Wall Street Journal

“The rapid evolution of technology in Somalia—and people’s access to it—comes as several telecommunications companies here jockey for customers amid the absence of any government-regulated phone or Internet access. The competition to supply phone service has stoked the nascent revival of Somalia’s shattered economy, and it shows that some complex businesses can thrive even in one of Africa’s least developed markets.”
